okay so i gave it a day of thought over some stuff, time to write up my thoughts
first immediate thing is - i dont know if lamdadelta is supposed to be Satoko? Bernkastel is a much more 1-to-1 translation of Rika's sprites than Satoko would be. I get that Satoko is the one who acts tsundere and goes "OHOHOHOHO" but-- working theory is that Lambdadelta is supposed to be a stand-in for--
Miyo Takano!
Hair color threw me off for a little, but I don't think Satoko has a perfect haircolor match for her either. I'm avoiding looking up old Umi sprites so I can't compare the old Lamda ones with the old Satoko ones, but I think Takano makes a good bit of sense-- especially with how her hair looks, its a similar style, but not exactly the same. Similar eye colors too.
Overall though, I'm mainly assuming this from a lot of the stuff Bern was saying.
"My game with Lambda" really suggests this - it's a completely reasonable thing for me to assume this is supposed to be Rika vs Takano. Obviously, this wasn't how it was framed for most of Higurashi, but it just makes sense to call it that.
"Hard Workers are rewarded" makes sense for Takano.
I'll have to take a look at it and see how I think about it in future. For now, I'm gonna go with the idea that Lambda is Takano with some Satoko mannerisms.
Looking through the Higurashi Chapter 7 speech at the start, this is interesting - is Rika a personality that Bern made up?

okay, so time to figure out what I need to solve from this one.
QUESTION TIMEBeatrice brings up:

We need to consider each of these and come up with an alternate explanation for them.
I'm sure there are other questions, but let's start with this.
Chapel should be simple enough - it's the tutorial mystery, so I figured out how the key could have been given to Maria and taken from her inbetween. Someone taking the key from Maria's handbag and replacing the wax seal after using the key. I'll need to think about this a little later. Especially considering where Maria got the envelope from in the first place.
You know what, there's another weird thing with the fact that Beatrice completely disappears. I need to consider that as I make my theories.
Hidden Door refers to an entrance or exit that cannot be recognised by those who do not know of it.
There are only five master keys.
Jess's Room
The only master keys are the ones held by the servants, one key each.
There are no types of hidden doors.
This door is the only way in or out.
The only way to lock this door is with Jess's single key or the master keys, only one of which is held by each servant.
The window is locked from the inside.
Kanon was killed in this room.
When the door is locked, it does not permit any form of entry or exit.
No trick could have the effect of locking the door from the outside without using a key.
No hidden doors in this room. There is no way to get in or out other than the door and the windows.
At the time of corpse discovery, nobody was in the room apart from Battler, George, Maria, Rosa, Genji, Gohda, Shannon, Kumasawa and Nanjo. (And the corpse of Jess) No humans exist that you were not aware of. No one is hiding.

Servant Room
Keys to it are in the key box in the center of the servant room. Several keys exist, but they are all inside the key box.

Okay so
I would like to examine what ways a locked room can be constructed.
Beatrice established that mystery novels do not have true locked rooms, as that is impossible. Instead, they employ tricks to make it seem like they were locked rooms.
Beatrice's goal in making it seem like locked rooms is to make Battler submit and admit that magic is the only way she could have constructed them. However, we are going to try and deconstruct them and explain them in a human manner. Chessboard thinking leads us to examine why exactly Beatrice is trying to hide that these were locked rooms - if she wants to argue with Battler than these rooms could not have been done without magic, then the truth should be that there is no magic, and there is a human explanation for it.
Having said this, we should now examine how a locked room can be constructed in the first place.
I understand a locked room to be:
- A room where a crime has occurred which is locked when it is discovered.- The perpetrator should have not been able to leave the room and still lock the doors.
Like Beatrice says, a locked room doesn't exist (without magic). Only the appearance of a locked room. There is always a trick to it.
So, based on those, we should examine what tricks can be used to give the appearance of a locked room.
The aspects of the locked room we can tackle are - the room itself, the locking, and the leaving the room.
The aspects of the room itself can be obfuscated by:
- A secret entrance/exit (a hatch/window)
- Somewhere to hide within the room (a secret closet to hide in until everyone passes)
- Something inherent about the room that allows the crime to happen from outside/lock the door from outside (gassing the room/auto locking door)
The locking can be obfuscated with:
- Another method to lock/unlock the room (like lockpicking a door closed or a device to lock the door when you leave - even another key to the room)
- Not locking the door at all in the first place (someone could pretend it is locked when found, or it could only be considered "locked" because someone)
- Working together with the victim (being invited into the room or them locking the door from inside before they do the crime themself)
- The method to unlock it being "unavailable" for some reason (the key not being accessible at the time of crime)
The leaving the room can be obfuscated with:
- Not leaving the room (hiding in the room still)
- Timing of leaving the room (like leaving just after people walk in or something)
- Not having to enter the room in the first place (a way to kill someone automatically or something)
- Victim is the perpetrator (Perpetrator and victim are the same person who did the crime to themselves)
I think the Chapter 1 murders can still be reasonably explained by Kinzo + Maria nonsense, even more so because we know that Genji is willing to believe in and work towards Beatrice's revival, as he is furniture and willing to help
Chap 2
Chapel - I think is reasonable to still explain using the answers given by the game - Beatrice resigns from that conversation, something that she does not normally do. They were all killed somewhere else and brought into the chapel using Maria's key.
Jess's Room - Jess's key was inside (not stated in red, interesting?) and so was the master key. Keys are inside, the mystery is focused on how have you locked the door and gotten out?
Red truth states that if the door was locked from outside, then it was a key.
If it was a key - they either found a way to get the key back inside the room (unlikely since you need to work with Jess for that (Kanon is out the room)) OR they got access to someone else's key (willingly or unwillingly)
The only 4 keys we can use are Genji, Gohda, Kumasawa and Shannon.
Nobody owns up to lending a key later, but everyone apart from Genji dies anyways
We must posit that the killer either worked together with Genji, or stole someone's keys
Kumasawa seems to have been asleep during this time - I think the murderer (whoever it is) stole her key and returned it after. She only shows up after they all get back from the Chapel (Jess and Kanon are already dead.)
During this time, Kumasawa is asleep, Genji and Shannon and Kinzo are in Kinzo's room, and the rest are at the Chapel.
My theory is that either Beatrice (real person edition), Kumasawa, or one of the 3 in Kinzo's room, have gone to get Kumasawa's key and use it kill Jess (and do something???? to Kanon and take the body) and use the key to lock the room from outside, taking Kanon's body. They then return the key to Kumasawa.
Beatrice is most likely theory here, unless Genji snuck out.
Servant Room - Beato says that the keys for it are all currently inside the key box, not that they were there the whole (someone could have taken it and replaced it after)
Beatrice also specifically says that you cannot UNLOCK the door without these, no comment about locking.
The corpses are not in this room hidden somewhere when we open the door.
Two keys were found in this room - Kanon's (on Nanjo) and Kumasawa's. This leaves Gohda's, Shannon's and Genji's. And the servant room keys.
Okay, ignoring the fact that Kanon came back to life or is evil now-- I think my theory is that someone used the servant room keys from the box to lock the door, then returned them after the fact.
Either Shannon grabbed the keys when she left the room for a bit, or Beatrice/Kinzo came along and grabbed the key to fuck with the bodies (he has a vested intrest in people believing in Beatrice)
Natsuhi Room - The room was locked until George grabbed the key from her in the chapel, THEN he died inside the room with it.
Genji stays in the kitchen. Kinzo is in his room. Beatrice is nowhere to be seen. Rosa Battler Maria are all inside the Parlor (this is parlor locked room)
There are 5 master keys (Rosa has all of them) and 1 normal key (it is in the room upon discovery)
Beatrice says that the doors and windows were locked from INSIDE
Working theory is that someone inside the room was not dead when the door was locked (George or Gohda). The killer would have told them to lock the door and put it back in George's pocket and they would let him live or something similar. I think this is probably George since he would want to look at Shannon/protect her body from being stolen/harmed even more.
Killer would be Beatrice/Genji/Kinzo here.
Parlor - She technically never says that the parlor is locked in red, but I think that's a bad faith argument.
Key to the parlor is inside the servant room. Again, someone could have taken it and put it back there. Again, I think this is Beatrice/Kinzo breaking in with the key and then returning it.
OR it's Maria planting the letter right when they're about to leave the room.
Overarching Questions
Is Magic real? - No my chud witch told me not to stop thinking
Do you need to kill in the order of the twilights? - I assumed yes, but there's some fucking around with times here. I am going to assume that timing doesn't matter for now, and you just have to stake the correct parts, but I do not know what messing with the timings actually does apart for let some specific kills like the two who are close work out nicer. It looks like the order of staking matters more, but I will be paying attention to this later.
Is there an unreliable narrator? - If magic is not real, a lot of the energy sword fights and stuff doesn't really work. So I have to assume that there is some level of unreliableness to the narrator. I cannot say how far this goes right now - either we are supposed to be taking every magic scene as a blatant lie and only get the information about how characters would act from them, OR we need to assume that there is SOME level of supernatural elements? Obviously the end of this when everything goes insano witch mode is fake. I don't know which yet, but hopefully I will figure this out soon.
Why does Maria say "solve my mystery" at the end of 1? - ??????????? when does she get the chance to write this even?????? why does she want it solved?????
What was up with that scene in 2 with everyone going "damn you proved the Devil's Proof"? - LIKE ROSA WAS HERE IT DOESNT MAKE SENSE. EVERYONE accepted that she was a witch. Why does Rosa not talk about this at all? It shouldn't have happened in the first place because she never mentions them going here the day before. This is like literally a fucking fake scene and doesn't make any sense. Rosa did not go to the Chapel on Night 1, because she seems REALLY unsure about going in the next day, as if it's forbidden by Kinzo. If she went in on night 1, that would make 0 sense. It's a fake scene, and I will be looking out for more of them going forwards in order to spot a pattern.
What is Beatrice's loss condition? Epitaph can't just be it right??? - I think her loss condition is everyone denying her? Or saying that she doesn't exists (as a witch)? Which is kinda the same as my other thought, which is that she loses if everyone knows how her tricks are done? I think that she is a real human, but with some supernatural aspects to her that means that she NEEDS to be percieved and understood to "exist". OR. I think that Beatrice needs to understand/feel true love in order to do this. A love for life and the human experience might be neccessary to defeat her. She seems extremely pessimistic when it comes to men, but was happy opening herself up to Shannon before. I think that at some point, Battler's goal will shift from just solving the epitaph to saving Beatrice too.

What's up with the tea parties and stuff? - So Beatrice isn't fully revived unless everyone believes in her which is why her magic is always incomplete. So I guess that's her wincon, even more than just "i want Battler to lose".
Torii gate missing at the start - I guess it's just by chance that it sank????
Witches - Bern wants us to win against Beatrice because we're trapped in the timeloop and she has empathy for us. Beatrice wants to be fully revived AND understood and feared by people. Lambda ????????? idk yet but she just seems to look out for herself
